2nd-ranked Teutopolis rolls over RHS

By TIM BROOKS
Sports Editor

Teutopolis didn't waste any time proving their 2nd-place ranking in the most recent IHSA Class A boys' basketball polls wasn't a fluke.

The Wooden Shoes put on a 32-minute display of basketball skill at the expense of Robinson during a 78-31 non-conference win in the RHS gym.

"Teutopolis is a very good basketball team," said RHS boys' basketball coach Bob Coffman after the loss. "I don't think they're that much better than us, but they've earned their ranking."

The Wooden Shoes shutout RHS halfway through the first quarter and they led 15-1 with two minutes on the first-quarter clock. Teutopolis increased its 20-3 first-quarter lead into a 32-13 advantage at halftime, and they added 46 more points in the second half en route to its lopsided victory.

"We wanted to try and control the tempo of the game, yet be aggressive and get to the free throw line," Coffman said. "We wanted to try to get them in foul trouble, but it didn't work."

Teutopolis, who had a 31-13 edge on the boards, didn't miss a field goal in the third quarter and shot 66 percent (31-for-47) from the floor.

"We've played 19 games so far this season and the guys are little tired right now," Coffman said. "We'll give them a couple of days off and get back to work on Friday."

Jason Runde led four T-town players in double figures with 19 points. Craig Westendorf and Rich Borries added 12 each, while Wade Koester had 11 points and 10 assists.

Borries was credited with seven rebounds, four blocked shots, two assists and a steal; Westendorf had five rebounds and five assists.

Ben Miller had six points to lead Robinson, while Logan Brimberry and Dustin Reinoehl had four each. Trent Holt, Austin Siler and Meyers Leonard recorded three points each, while Ben Jones, Derek Hannahs, Jacob Carpenter and Patrick Fulling added two points each.

"We've got six weeks to prepare for the last week of February," Coffman said. "There are still areas we need to make improvements, and I told the seniors they've invested too much time and worked too hard to not stay focused now."

Robinson (6-13, 1-6 Apollo) will return to action on Friday, Jan. 26, when the Maroons host Mt. Zion for a 6:15 p.m. conference match-up.
