Unit 4 OKs Price's resignation at end of '06-07 year

Daily News

Changes are coming in the Oblong Unit 4 school district after the board accepted the resignation of long-time superintendent Allen Price.

The board voted to accept Price's resignation effective at the end of the 2006-2007 school year. Price began working in the Oblong school district as the principal at Oblong High School in 1972. He became the superintendent in 1990.

"I've had a very enjoyable experience working with the different school boards and with the community," Price told the Daily News.

During his tenure in the Oblong school district, Price worked on many projects in the school and in the community and points to the recent grade-school construction project as his proudest achievement.

In other business Monday evening, the board approved Policy 269 pertaining to school-board meeting procedures and tentatively approved policies pertaining to the types of school-board meetings, organizational school-board meetings, the board member oath and conduct, fiscal and business management, board member term of office, abused and neglected child reporting and qualifications, terms and duties of board officers.

The board approved opening closed-session minutes from July through December 2006 and approved employing David Weger, CPA, as the school auditor for the 2007-2008 school year.

Price said a tentative school calendar for the 2007-2008 school year has been posted for review by faculty and staff and recommendations are being considered. "We're just gathering information. Nothing has been set in concrete," Price said.

Oblong Elementary Principal Jeff Patchett recognized 18 students for their work in the Oblong Character Counts during the month of December dealing with caring.

In other matters, the board also:

• Approved an instructor and four freshman FFA members to attend the Made for Excellence Conference in Collinsville, on Jan. 19-20.

• Approved the high school cheerleaders' request to attend ICCA Regional Competition on Jan. 21 at Highland High School in Highland.

• Approved the choral director and 10 students to attend the Millikin Music Festival in Decatur on Feb. 11-12.

• Approved the high school band instructor and four students to attend Southern Illinois University's Heartland Honor Band Program in Carbondale Feb. 1-3.

• Hired Mary Lou Pusey as high-school cook.

The next meeting of the Unit 4 board is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in the elementary library.
