Marathon gives $25,000 for pavilion
Plans for a new pavilion complex at Robinson City Park got a big boost Friday when Marathon Petroleum donated $25,000 to the project.

"The city is very excited about Marathon's donation," Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Sheryl Bunten said.

"You've got a great idea and a great concept," Marathon Illinois Refining Division Manager John Swearingen said as he and Human Resources Manager Kris Krendl presented city representatives with the check. "It's a pleasure to bring such an outstanding concept to reality."

"It will be a real improvement that everyone can use," Mayor Gary Davis said.

Parks and Recreation Supervisor Mike Shimer added the donation is enough to allow the city to proceed with Phase I of the plan. It will soon go out for bids on construction of the pavilion and playground. It is hoped the pavilion will be ready to use by July.

So far, about $168,000 has been raised for the project. Shimer said the city will continue to actively raise funds for the rest of the project, including construction of a stage and band shell.

Plans for the pavilion and band shell, as well as examples of the stone blocks that will bear the names of large contributors, are on display at the Robinson Community Center.
