Four arrested in anhydrous caper

Daily News

Quick action by Crawford County Sheriff's deputies early today resulted in the arrest of four West Terre Haute men trying to steal anhydrous ammonia.

Floyd A. Shepard Jr., 28, Hud R. Judy, 22, Charles R. Rowe, 22, and Andrew T. Bridgewater, 19, were arrested on charges of unlawful possession of anhydrous ammonia with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.

Deputies Clark Myers, Chad Weaver and Kyle Harris, responding to a report of a strong ammonia smell coming from the Mont Eagle Mills anhydrous ammonia plant located along Illinois Route 1 near Flat Rock around 2:15 this morning, encountered a suspicious vehicle with four occupants near the plant.

Two of the occupants attempted to elude police on foot while the other two fled north in the vehicle along Route 1.

Myers was able to run down the two suspects on foot, while Weaver pursued the vehicle and stopped the car near Lincoln Trail College. Harris assisted Myers at the scene.

Sheriff Todd Liston and Chief Deputy Rich Cravens commended the officers.

Shepard is also charged with fleeing and eluding, Judy with disobeying a police officer and obstructing a police officer, and Rowe with obstructing a police officer. All four men are in Crawford County Jail awaiting bond to be set.
