School celebrates character-ed award

Sports Editor

Palestine Grade School students and teachers got a chance to celebrate a historic achievement for the school during an assembly in the newly opened grade-school gymnasium last month.

Principal Sheila Mikeworth presented to the school on Monday, Dec. 11, the National School of Character Promising Practice Award she received on behalf of the school Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C. The award, which was given to just four schools in the state of Illinois, was for the Purple Hands Project, which urges students not to use their hands or words to hurt themselves or others.

"It is very impressive to be a part of this," Mikeworth said. "I am very honored."

This particular project, as well as the Character Education project as a whole, has had a profound and lasting effect on everyone in the school, faculty and staff included.

"This continues to have such an effect on our discipline (at the school)," Mikeworth said. "We are training our youngsters to be good citizens. We are the Pioneers and this is a pioneering thing we are doing."

Mikeworth added they are always trying to add more to the Character Ed. curriculum, as they strive for their ultimate goal of being recognized as a National School of Character. Students recently filmed recycling commercials as a way for them to become more active in the community.

"You're true pioneers in education," Mikeworth told the mass of students during the assembly.

The Purple Hands Project is a worldwide initiative that began in February 1997 in the Salem, Ore., public schools. In just seven weeks, more than 11,000 K-12 students had made pledges.
